Z. Naturforsch. 54c, 8 1 2 -8 2 3 (1999); received December 1, 1998/March 2, 1999 Biomass, Carbohydrate. Drought Stress, Elevated C 0 2, Leaf Anatomy Young sessile oak (Quercus petraea) trees were exposed for one vegetation period in closed environmental chambers in a crossed factorial study on effects to varied C 0 2 concentrations, ozone concentrations and irrigation treatments. Elevated C 0 2 concentrations (ambient + 350 (.imol mol-1 ) caused a significant increase in biomass production, alterations in leaf anat omy and chloroplast ultrastructure as well as an increase in leaf starch content, as compared to ambient C 0 2 concentrations. The effects of elevated 0 3 concentrations and drought stress were far less distinct. The leaf starch content was influenced by C 0 2 and O 3 in a synergis tic manner.

Carbon partitioning and allocation in northern red oak seedlings and mature trees in response to ozone.
Northern red oak (Quercus rubra L.) seedlings and trees differ in their response to ozone. Previous work reported reductions in net photosynthesis, carboxylation efficiency and quantum yield of mature tree leaves, whereas seedling processes were unaffected by the same ozone exposure. To further characterize differences in ozone response between seedlings and mature trees, we examined carbon par...
متن کاملResponses of two closely related oak species, Quercus robur and Q. petraea, to excess manganese concentrations in the rooting medium.
Quercus robur (L.) and Q. petraea (Matt.) Liebl. are European oak species that often grow in forest soils with high soluble manganese (Mn2+) concentrations. We tested the effects of Mn2+ at concentrations of 0.0024 mM (control), 0.24 mM (typical of acidic forest soils) and 1.2 mM (typical of forest soils under strongly reducing conditions) on the growth, tissue anatomy, foliar element concentra...
متن کاملEffect of Altitude and Growing Season on Some Physiological Properties of Leaf from Persian Oak (Quercus brantii) in Zagros Forest (Case study: Ilam)
Abstract Understanding in variation in tree leaf related to altitude and climate change define the plant adaptation. These variations will predict their respond to the future changes. According to the vast distribution of Persian oak (Quercus brantii) trees in Zagros forest, the study of structural changes and the recognition the Persian oak ecological needs is crucial for their conservation a...
متن کاملEffects of severe dehydration on leaf photosynthesis in Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl.: photosystem II efficiency, photochemical and nonphotochemical fluorescence quenching and electrolyte leakage.
Leaf disks of oak (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl.) trees were subjected to rapid dehydration in air in the dark. Optimal photochemical efficiency of PS II (F(v)/F(M)), photochemical (q(P)) and nonphotochemical (q(NP)) quenchings of chlorophyll a fluorescence, and relative conductivity (C(r)) of leaf disk diffusate were measured in leaf disks with different water deficits (D). No effect of dehyd...
متن کاملThe Study of Different Water Regimes on Photosynthetic Performance and Leaf Water Status of Pistachio Trees (Pistacia vera L.)
Water deficiency is one of the most important environmental stresses that limit plant growth and crop production. Measurement of chlorophyll fluorescence parameters is considered as an important indicator to evaluate the photosynthetic apparatus. In the present study, the effects of regulated water deficit, investigated in four water-regimes in pistachio orchard with 12-year-old trees of Akbari...
